I recently photographed a special evening celebrating contemporary ceramics at Ligne Roset Westend, bringing together ceramics, furniture and interior design in the heart of London's West End. The event brought together guests from the worlds of art, ceramics and design, with work displayed throughout the beautifully designed Ligne Roset showroom. It was a great setting for documentary event photography. Rather than simply photographing the exhibits, my brief was to capture the atmosphere of the evening, the conversations, interactions and small moments happening around the showroom.

Eight Contemporary Ceramicists

The evening celebrated the work of eight contemporary ceramicists: Sue Mundy, Deiniol Williams, Emily Stubbs, Ella Porter, Barry Stedman, Ruth King, Sharon Griffin and Tanya Gomez. Their ceramics were displayed alongside Ligne Roset's contemporary furniture and interiors, creating an interesting relationship between the individual pieces and the spaces around them. As guests arrived and explored the exhibition, my approach was to work unobtrusively, documenting both the work itself and the reactions, conversations and connections it generated. The evening also included a one-hour Q&A, providing another opportunity to photograph the people behind the work and the interaction between speakers and guests. Craft Potters Association and Contemporary Ceramics, the gallery on Great Russell Street, were also involved in the evening, bringing together an audience with a shared interest in contemporary ceramics and design.

Documentary Event Photography at Ligne Roset Westend

For commercial events like this, I work in much the same way as I approach documentary photography generally. I observe what's happening rather than constantly directing people or interrupting conversations. It means guests can enjoy the event naturally while I concentrate on finding the moments that tell its story. Alongside the wider atmosphere of the evening, I photographed the details of the ceramics, the Ligne Roset showroom and furniture, individual guests and speakers, and the interactions taking place throughout the event. The result is a varied collection of photographs that documents what happened while also giving the client a useful library of professional imagery for social media, websites, PR and future marketing.
